Booking Through Thursday: Paper or plastic?

Do you read e-Books? – Not really. I have a few on the computer, and I’m a big proponent of Gutenberg, Google and books digitization. I even wrote a paper about it, but I don’t generally read them.

If so, how? On your computer, or a PDA? – When I do, it’s on my laptop computer.

Or are you a paper purist? Why? – I love the feel of a good book between my hands. Nothing like a crisp, fairly unread new book smell and curling up with it. Also, even though I’m on the computer a lot reading for everything else. I feel most of my real reading should be offline.

It’s funny, a lot of the book bloggers said the same thing about holding a book in the hand. It’s not just a hobby; it’s an experience.

I’ve noticed the same thing — one might think that online book people might prefer online-style books, but that isn’t the case. Certainly not for me!

    This is a difficult question.

On the one hand, I’m all for saving paper, and I do love the idea of e-books. Especially because they make some out of print or otherwise difficult to find books so accessible – they are just one click away!

But on the other hand, reading on the computer for a long time tends to give me a headache, and… I do LOVE holding the physical object of the book in my hands, and curling up with it for as long as I want. I suppose, though, that if I had a laptop I would read more e-books.

I agree, Nymeth. There are a lot of people, other than us paperphiles who wouldn’t mind e-books. I’ve actually done some research on the digitization of books and the importance of it. I’m a big supporter of it because there are so many books out of print and that we can’t access as well. Reading on the computer does give me headaches too, but I think this can be helped with future technology and possibly a better PDA. I love the turn of a page. I’d miss it.

You know, I’m exactly the same way. I can sit at the computer reading stuff for hours, but when it comes to actual reading reading, I want to have that book in my hand. It’s something about the feel of it, I guess. And I don’t think my DH would appreciate me hauling the laptop into bed at night so I could read a book.
