The Sleeper and the Spindle by Neil Gaiman

The Sleeper and the Spindle

Another beguiling and gorgeous book from Neil Gaiman.

I enjoyed the fairy tale style and illustrations. I love the protagonist and her troop of Dwarves.

There is also a slight creepiness or darkness to Gaiman’s works which is really nice. It’s not over the top most of time and raises the stakes and suspense level. It makes it oddly realistic in a fantasy work.

It’s always a pleasure to read a Gaiman book.

Hi Geoff! I’m flattered that you’ve asked. Gaiman is one of my favourite authors and I don’t want to steer you wrong.

The Sandman graphic novels is a 10 part series which I think is Gaiman’s most brilliant work. It’s what many Gaiman fans love and it has everything. However, it is really absorbing, intense, and takes awhile.

For a more gentle introduction, I recommend either Stardust (very much a fairy tale retelling in the best possible way) or The Graveyard Book (young adult book that takes place in a graveyard, perfect Halloween reading). If you like Terry Pratchett, I recommend his and Gaiman’s Good Omens.

Gaiman has a large oevre and I like most of it so it’s hard for me to say what you should start with. I’ve liked most of what he’s written so I think it’ll be fine whatever you choose. Good luck! Thank you for commenting as always. 🙂
