FO Fridays: Agnes

Originally, I had bought this yarn for Sylvi, a big cabled coat. I started it, but it was on hold for years. In the end, I decided to frog it and use the yarn for other things. I usually think of sweaters first when I have an abundance of yarn.

I wanted a cozy, easy house sweater. This is an easy and straight forward pattern. It’s a top-down raglan with pockets. I even made it one size larger so it can have positive ease so I can easily throw it over anything in the cold months.

Unfortunately, this finished object ended up shrinking when I blocked it. The arms ended up tighter than I would have liked. Worse of all, this yarn is surprisingly itchy. I like lopi and other rough wools, but this wool is itchier in another way. The pattern is fine but I wish the pockets were much bigger. As written, they are small.

I don’t hate this sweater and it is thick and warm. I just don’t think I’ll reach for it like some of the other sweaters I have around the home. I really did learn that I have to love a yarn before making it into a sweater.

Bust: 34”/ (17”/43.5cm x 2)
Body from underarm: 15.25”/40cm
Body: 20”/51cm

Modifications & Notes:

  • Circular gauge 7.0mm 12sts and about 16-17 rnds
  • German Twisted CO
  • Paired lifted Cat Bordhi increases
  • Slipped the first stitch when doing back and forth for pocket openings
  • Pocket opening about 4.5”
  • Icelandic Bind Off
  • Pockets used 5.5mm and Cascade Eco+ “Lake Chelan”
  • Made pockets 0.5” longer in depth but this was not enough. Would recommend 1-1.5” if you like big pockets (which I do and should have made bigger)
  • Modified three needle bind off
  • The yarn is quite prickly and I say this as someone who likes a lot of rough yarns. I think I’ll make a blanket out of the rest of this rather than any other garments.

Lessons Learned: Hmm. I have not really made a pocket this way, but I believe I have done three modified three needle bind off and icelandic bind off before.

Would I knit it again? No
