The Classics Spin 2

Classics Club

The Second Classics Spin from the Classics Club. As with before, I must pick twenty books, then a random number will be selected and each of us must read the number listed at X number by July 1st 2013.

These Spins are really useful because other challenges, reads, and activities have taken me away from the classics this year.

I have mostly kept the same books as I did my first Classics Spin. My challenge is that I own almost every one of these books so I must read them to clear my TBR shelf. I removed Walden since that was what I read last time, and took out Wives and Daughters if only because I really want to read North & South before that. I added Cannery Row by John Steinbeck and Lois the Witch by Gaskell instead. I think I own the latter; I can’t remember because I’m at work at the moment.

  1. The Warden by Anthony Trollope
  2. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce
  3. Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie
  4. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte
  5. Bleak House by Charles Dickens
  6. William-an Englishman by Cicely Hamilton
  7. Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell
  8. On the Road by Jack Kerouac
  9. Don Quixote by Cervantes
  10. Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
  11. Nicholas Nickelby by Charles Dickens
  12. A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
  13. The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
  14. Sons and Lovers by D. H. Lawrence
  15. Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson
  16. Death in Venice by Thomas Mann
  17. The Complete Poems by T. S. Eliot
  18. The Return of the the Native by Thomas Hardy
  19. Cannery Row by John Steinbeck
  20. Lois the Witch by Elizabeth Gaskell

Hi Maria! I glanced at your list and I’ve read many of the books you have on it already, but there are a lot of classics out there. Good luck with the spin!

A lot of excellent books on this list! Midnight’s Children, Winesburg Ohio, Death in Venice, and Cannery Row are all amazing. I hated Atlas Shrugged, but it’s worth reading I suppose, if you want to know what people are talking about. I wasn’t a big fan of The Warden, either (Trollope just isn’t my man). I have the same Joyce novel on my Spin list, too. And if you don’t get to On the Road for this one, maybe you can join us next month for The Beats of Summer! Good luck!

(Oh, and I LOVE Thomas Hardy. I haven’t read Return of the Native, yet, but he has never disappointed me).

Hi Adam! I’m a Hardy girl so this will my fifth Hardy. He hasn’t failed me either; I love his style. When I bought the Warden, it was on the advice of someone in the book sale who said he’d preferred Trollope over Dickens which isn’t something you hear every day. I do have issue with Dickens at times so it’ll be interesting to compare. I also expect to hate Atlas Strugged because I saw the movie, and I’m not sure why Ayn Rand is so popular, but I guess I need to read it to properly hate it. Awesome, I’ll definitely join The Beats of Summer if I don’t get On the Road for this. Thanks for the comment and good luck as well!

Hi Brona! I bought the go years ago, and I’m not sure it is a classic even if it was written in 1920. Is it a classic if no one else has heard of it? We’ll see how it goes. Thanks!
