Library Love

On my weekly trip to the library yesterday, I saw and bought this bag which goes to the public library foundation. It’s one of those Bring Your Own Bag iniatives that encourage the use of recyclable and reusable bags in place of plastic bags. I’m really glad to have bought it since the money goes directly to the library and up to this point, I’ve been using one of my purses or a plastic bags (namely the ones I have from the LCBO; the government-controlled alcohol chain in Ontario) to carry my books to and fro every week. I often carry a lot of items from the library and normal plastic bags are ineffective any way.

I love my public library; I spent summers there as a child, and I have been going every week for years. I often take out way more than I can handle which is sad and rather addictive. Right now, I’m on a particularly lending streak as I have 36 items separated into four piles in my house. The pile above on the right is all twelve of the books for the Book Awards Challenge, some of them are the library’s, a couple are mine and a couple are a friend’s.

My reading was severely neglected last week because I was reading fanfiction. Sometimes, it comes over me especially now that I’m rereading Harry Potter. Speaking of which, the pile on the left has Books 3 and 4. I’m listening to the audiobook for 3 now, but I’ll mostly read it after I do some knitting and patterns browsing.

Lots of books must be read this week especially since I start summer school next week.

My trip from the wilderness (cottage country) allocated me some wonderful souvenirs: big, itchy bug bites! I always seem particularly susceptible, and I don’t own bug spray since I don’t go to the country too much.  I’m one of those people that bugs seem to be love to consume because even with a few people around me, I am the one that receives the most ugly of bites. I’m treating them with aloe vera and Asian Tiger balm. Other than the bites, we had a nice lazy day in which my friend and I planned to read, but ended up wading in water and watching My Best Friend’s Wedding very briefly.

My plans to knit and read these last couple of days have been thwarted. I haven’t exercised either. It’s been particular hot and humid. Tomorrow, I’m getting up bright and early for an annual garage sale to catch some deals.  I’ll cast on Monkey socks tonight. I am pretty sure I can do everything; the only thing I am worried about is the gusset.

Here’s a book meme that I found from Dewey:

“You simply have to grab the book nearest to you (no cheating here), turn to page 161, and post the text of the fifth full sentence on the page along with the body of the instruction on your blog. Then you tag 3 people.”

I haven’t started this book, but I will soon because it’s due next Friday. From Death by Black Hole by Neil Degrasse Tyson.

Glowing objects, like stars, come in three basic colors: red, white, and blue–a cosmic fact that would have pleased the founding fathers.

Heh. I’d be more amused if I was American, and it was weird for me to write the “color” because I am a staunch Queen’s English speller of “colour”. That’s for another post about my language idiosyncrasies.

365 Days: A self-portrait a day for a year.

Reached 100 days worth of portraits. It would have been early if I hadn’t missed those weeks in January. This project has not been easy for me largely because I don’t like pictures of myself and inspiration doesn’t work like that. It comes and goes, but that’s the challenge. Still, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t result in some particular boring or bad portraits over the last 100 photos. On the other hand, most of my most Interesting photos (as deemed by flickr) are my 365 Days photos. Of course, this just is because it is the largest category of my photos. Still, I’ve learned to imrovise, and I realized that I can shoot and do like macro photography.

Another difficulty of the project for me is the fact I’ve decided not to take a full on facial portrait of myself which has resulted in lots of macros and photos featuring my hair, hands, and lips. The features I relatively like best because I am wary of the lower half of my body and my face as a whole. I’m quite shy about it, and this seems redundant in a self-portrait challenge. I’m aware of that, but the goal is to force creativity (which has happened), and I have ideas for portraits and poses, but I don’t have models. Either way, I’m stuck with myself.

About today’s photo and out takes: I’ve been particularly inspired of late because I rediscovered a resource for fashion photography. There were a lot of out takes to yesterday’s entry, but I have a ton for today’s. Some of which may never get onto flickr or be seen by anyone because some of the pics pushed a boundary. This photo shoot also resulted in a few photos where I didn’t think I looked like myself. I’ve been wearing makeup in recent entries, and today was the first time I wore lipstick 365. This shoot was very different, and I’m quite proud. I hope I can get inspired by more fashion photography in the future.
