Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro

This was my second Ishiguro of the year after The Buried Giant and I liked this more. Klara’s first person narrative was so well done in its mix of astute observations and purity. I was fascinated by her insights on the humans around her and her adulation for the sun. I enjoyed reading about Klara’s relationships with all the characters especially Rick. Ishiguro’s plots and settings are different from one novel to the next but he has many familiar themes. This one included his staples of aging, sacrifice, memory, and a belief in higher power or values. The ending left me feeling dissatisfied. I understood why it ended the way it did and it was consistent with Ishiguro’s writing since he always has melancholic endings. I was more attached to Klara in general as I have a thing for robot characters. I liked that she had peace at the end which most Ishiguro protagonists have even if it is sometimes a bittersweet.
