The Fourth Classics Spin from the Classics Club. As with before, I must pick twenty books, then a random number will be selected and each of us must read the number listed at X number by January 1, 2014.
Even though I still have not finished my book from the last spin, these Spins are really useful because other challenges, reads, and activities have taken me away from the classics this year.
My challenge is that I own almost every one of these books so I must read them to clear my TBR shelf.
- The Warden by Anthony Trollope
- A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce
- Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie
- Bleak House by Charles Dickens
- North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell
- Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell
- Don Quixote by Cervantes
- Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
- Nicholas Nickelby by Charles Dickens
- A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
- The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
- Sons and Lovers by D. H. Lawrence
- Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson
- Death in Venice by Thomas Mann
- The Complete Poems by T. S. Eliot
- The Return of the the Native by Thomas Hardy
- Cannery Row by John Steinbeck
- Inferno by Dante Alighieri
- The Magus by John Fowles
- Kim by Rudyard Kipling
What’s on your spin list?
Christy (A Good Stopping Point)
I love Bleak House! And the Warden was an enjoyable read, with an even more enjoyable and accomplished sequel. (I haven’t read beyond those two yet in the Barchester series.)
Hi Christy! I’m looking forward to Trollope. I’ve been meaning to read him for years. Thanks for the comment!
Some GREAT picks on your list!! I loved both of those by Elizabeth Gaskell, and Bleak House is my favorite Dickens of all time. And Cannery Row is a hoot. I hope you get a good one for your Spin selection!
Hi Karen! I really enjoyed Gaskell’s writing in Cranford, but I haven’t had time to pick up her books yet. I’m hoping for N&S first then W&D. Bleak House is another one to watch. Thanks!
My Book Strings
I have Death in Venice on my spin list as well. You have an interesting list; I hope you’ll get a book you enjoy.
Hi My Book Strings! I think the only one I am not looking forward to is Atlas Shrugged, but overall, I’m excited for most of the books. Good luck and thanks!
Riv @ Bookish Realm
Wow, you have some BIG books in the list 🙂
I love John Knowles, The Magus has received some very controversial feedback but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Sons and Lovers left me no impression, but I think I was too young to read it, this year I read Lady Chatterley’s Lover and although it didn’t become my favourite, I can definitely appreciate Lawrence as an author. I hope you’ll have better luck with Sons and Lovers.
Hi Riv! Yes, I like big books! Length does not bother me. I’ve heard controversial things about the Magus too. A friend of mine loves it, but admitted he didn’t know of any woman or girl to have read it. I don’t think I have Lawrence yet, but I’ve had S&L for a few years now. Thanks for the comment!
I also have both of Gaskell’s books on my Spin List. I read A Little Princess earlier in the year (used to watch the movie as a kid) and didn’t like the books as I thought I would.
Hi crafts4others! Too bad about ALP. I also really liked the movie as a kid so I was hoping the book would follow in the same pattern. I’m excited for the Gaskells. Good luck!
Bleak House is by far my favorite Dickens novel, but many of these are treasured gems…and the rest I just haven’t read yet. I hope you get a book you’re looking forward to reading!
Hi Jenna! Bleak House seems to be a Dickens favourite this spin. I’m looking forward to it even more now. Thanks, Jenna!
I have Bleak House on my big list to, but I wasn’t brave enough to put it on my spin list this time.
Hi Maria! Next time perhaps? I haven’t read a Dickens in awhile and this one is a popular one so it should be at the top of the list. Have a good week!
